I typically go with if has no moving parts and is not a precision instrument, HF is fine (e.g. hammers, jack stands, free screwdriver sets) but having seen cutoff wheels shatter/explode/impale I wouldn’t source mine there for sure.

I haven’t had any explode...but I did start going to a local welding supply because they are almost the same price, and much better quality. That said I always keep the guard on, and eye and face protection.

I like theirs a lot for the price. I got some Dewalt ones from Ace when I needed some asap, and they barely lasted any longer than HF ones. Plus I think one broke apart on me. HF FTW

I’ve been using dirt cheap eBay ones for ages now. In my experience, they only explode if you put any kind of twist into them when you’re cutting through something, high quality or not.

I’ve seen other brands explode too. I think that’s just what happens when you spin a little disc that fast. I’m not saying that makes HF better, but I would guess they aren’t significantly worse than anyone else.

That said, I like your theory about non-precision and no moving parts.
